Here are some extra tips for around your home!

  • Upgrade Your Vacuum Cleaner – Use a three-stage HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. Unlike traditional vacuums, which expel dust and allergens back into the room as you clean, this filter is designed to trap 99.7% of small particles directly into its chamber.
  • Incorporate Area Rugs to Trap Airborne Particles – Using doormats at entry points in your home and area rugs in hallways and in between rooms traps dirt, dust and other allergens, preventing them from spreading throughout.
  • Replace Air Filters – For an average suburban home without pets, change your MERV 1 to 9 air filter every 90 days. A one-pet home should change their filters every 60 days, and homes with more than one pet and/or if you have someone in your home with allergy or respiratory problems, change the filter every 30 to 45 days.
  • Not All Cleaning Agents Are Clean – Make sure that when you are choosing cleaning agents, they are not loaded with toxic chemicals. Dispersing toxic chemicals throughout the home is no better than leaving allergens or spores that are already there, so make sure to avoid products with formaldehyde, chloroform and excessive amounts of chlorine or bleach.
  • Remove Deep-Seated Dust –Dust regularly holds phthalates, flame retardants, and phenols. Dry dusting can recirculate these toxic chemicals back into your airflow; for that reason, it is best to regularly vacuum and have your carpets professionally deep cleaned at least twice a year.
  • Don’t Forget about Your Upholstered Furniture – Don’t just vacuum your carpets. Remember that you spend more time on couches and chairs so be sure to vacuum the upholstery once every other week and have them professionally cleaned once a year as well.
